Okay – so I bit the bullet, got a 60-day sub and picked up Shadowbringers. I had purchased one of the “packages” on a holiday sale a few years ago and got a character to level 14.

So with all the stuff going on with Blizzard who knows what is going to happen to WoW. Best case scenario, someone with a clear WoW vision buys it out and turns it back into a spectacular MMO instead of layering on mobile game crap.

I only had the one FFXIV character (an Archer) and I had forgotten just about everything so I decided to start from scratch with a Gladiator.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Just because I had to give up my tanking dreams in WoW doesn’t mean it’s gone forever.

Anyway, since we all know I’m a bad player, tank is the best bet to keep me from dying to baby spiders every minute.

I actually didn’t have too many problems up to level 20. The big mistake I made was doing all the side quests along with the main quests. All that extra experience kicked up my levels so much that I had out-leveled a lot of the main quests.

This came back to bite me when I got really tired of running and wanted to get my chocobo at level 20. I had a whole bunch of level 15 main quests to do first and the second downside was my gear was way below what it should be at level 20.

Look at all the people!

The other problem was that the quest progression to unlock the riding was gated behind four dungeons.

Yup.

I picked Gladiator for my job – a tanking job. Four dungeons I had to do to get my riding.

I think you know where this is going….

I looked up gear vendors and bought enough gear to bump up my ilvl to 18. Yes, I still had a level 1 ring and belt. The gear gave me a little more confidence although the mix-and-match made me look more like a TBC circus clown instead of a serious tank.

In WoW I would just have said “to hell with it” and ignored the dungeons, but I can’t do that in FFXIV or it would kill my chances of becoming a Paladin at level 30 so….

First dungeon I had to complete was Sastasha. I found a few good videos from a Gladiator tank POV so I watched those over and over until I had a good idea of the dungeon – where to go, what to do, etc.

I queued up and before we started I told the group I was a new player and this was my first dungeon. Instead of getting insta-kicked like in WoW, the group was very helpful and we got through it with no problems. Someone even gave me a player commendation.

Next up were the Tam-Tara Deepcroft and Copperbell Mines. Rinse and Repeat. I just found good videos and watched them until I felt confident enough to queue up.

Although I was tempted to start believing I was some sort of tanking god, I do realize these are very low level dungeons with simple mechanics, but I was feeling pretty good anyway.

The last one I had was the Thousand Maws of Toto-Rak. From the videos I started to get the sinking feeling I used to get from Wailing Caverns. A network of tunnels where I would get lost forever (I have a really crappy sense of direction.)

But I had to get that chocobo, so I queued up, gave my usual speech about being a noob, and away we went. I only made a couple of wrong turns but obviously there were seasoned players in there with me, so it wasn’t nearly the disaster I thought it could be.

Dungeon complete!

I was able to continue on in the quest line and got my chocobo!

I even got six player commendations from the four dungeons – research pays off or they felt sorry for me lol.

I made it to level 30, became a Paladin and now apparently is when the dungeon difficulty starts to ramp up.

Amazingly enough, I only had maybe 2 or 3 quests along the way where I died several times before getting them. That’s a record for me.

I’m really enjoying FFXIV and I haven’t even scraped the surface. There’s a ton of other things I have yet to do and some things I don’t have a clue what they are.

It’s just amazing to see so many people playing.

I had only been playing the game for about 2 hours when someone opened a trade with me and gave me a “Trike” minion. I had just been thinking it would be fun to find a pet to run around with me and someone just gave me one out of the blue.

Check out that stunning armor!

I’m not “quitting” WoW. I’m putting it on “pause” because with all the crazy systems and stuff to do for them that I can’t do (Mythic+ LOL) it’s just dailies. I can’t progress my characters because there are just too many gates and RNG.

FFIXV reminds me of the fun I had when I first started WoW. I can’t really afford two subs so I might switch around so I can keep playing both.

Who knows?

Someone might be looking for a level 30 Paladin tank…
