Lord Rhyolith
I was asked to fill in again for the guild raid, and although the raid had defeated Lord Rhyolith before, this was my chance to see the Big Butt Boss go down in flames.
I only had a few minutes to celebrate (think there was also “Not an Ambi-Turner” achievement) before getting back to what I do best – dying!
I think the raid is still working on the last one, but I had a great time – thanks everyone!
I also got a big kick out of seeing my character on WoW Heroes with three Firelands bosses down – who would have thought that would ever happen? Woo Hoo!
DPS Woes…
I’m still bottom of the charts on dps which has been nagging me lately. I know I’m not going to do as well as someone with better gear, experience, etc. but I’m sure I should be doing much better with what I have right now.
I’ve got the two-piece bonuses for T11 and T12, all my stuff gemmed and enchanted properly, reforges are optimized. I’m following the spell priorities from shadowpriest.com and Elitist Jerks. I’m keeping Empowered Shadows up, refreshing my DoTs, etc. etc. and I’m averaging around 11k with buffs? Yikes!
I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong because I was pulling about the same in a troll with the 5% “Better Luck Next Time” buff. I’m missing something – but I don’t know where I’m going wrong.
Back to the drawing board…
Just because I have crappy dps doesn’t mean that I can’t have an interesting fight once in while…
Priest Tanking
I tagged along with a couple of guildies for a random troll and got ZA. I’m not sure what went wrong, but at the Jan’alai fight – always a tough one for me because I can never stay out of the darn fire – the tank went down, then a couple of other players went down. I’m not sure who was left as it was just me and one other person who could heal.
The boss was very low on health and I was almost oom so I thought what the heck I’ve got nothing to lose. I sent the Fiend in to “tank” for me and when it died the boss started beating on my face. I got just enough mana back from the Fiend to blow enough spells to kill the boss.
No, I didn’t save the day – it was fantastic heals from whoever was keeping me alive long enough to get the boss down – thank you!
And me caught without any Talent Points in the Priest Tanking tree….
I Need a Bigger Closet
The fun of putting together outfits for Transmogrification hit the wall when I realized I’m out of bank space. I can’t even send my outfits to an alt bank because they are soulbound.
So…a major bank clean out was hastily done and I might have to upgrade all my bank bags with Illusionary Bags – a rather expensive option!
It’s a good thing Blizzard anticipated the need for more storage space with the upcoming Void Storage, but I could sure use it now!
I’ve got three fun outfits and more on the way!
I lucked out and found the perfect hat for my Silver-Thread set.
Thanks to some fantastic guildies, I finally got the Ghostweave set complete! A big thanks to Troutwort for sending me the matching hood, and a special thanks to Koalabear’s mage for not only making me the Ghost Dye, but going out and farming all those mushrooms!
Running Scarlet Monastery instances for Silver-Thread items dropped a couple of other interesting pieces – the Mantle of Doan and the Illusionary Rod.
Well, that was just too good to pass up so…for your approval I present the obligatory Scarlet Crusade Clothie Set.
Apparently there is a very nice RP set using plate and/or mail, but we clothies have to be creative.
I had picked up the tabard a while ago, so a couple of more runs and I got the hat and robe. I found a lovely Runecloth Cloak in my Tailoring book and matching gloves at the auction house. I just need to find a suitable belt then I’m good to go!
Hurry up Blizzard – I need that Void Storage now!

Thanks for coming! You’ve seen 3 of the 4 bosses we have down! We’ll get the firebird soon, definitely. She is really hard so thanks for being such a sport about her.

DPS troubleshooting is always a tough one. I wrote about post about that sort of thing awhile back but I forgot what the advice was. hahaa.
Doing the same raid buffed as with that 5% bonus is about like I would expect. The buffs end up being similar to that. Maybe a bit better… but the fights are harder soit is not too shocking.
-Read blogs, hit trying dummy, read blogs again, and then read some more.
I find if I read the same advice twice, separated by messing with it, it really helps.
-Triple check your geming and stat optimization
-Are there any addons you could use to help you track duffs, debuffs, and procs?
Some of those fights your raw numbers can be very deceptive. Anything with target switches is going to throw drop numbers a lot. Of the first 4 fights the Shannox has the least target switching…. but has a ton of movement. Really all the firelands bosses we have done so far thwart DPS meters pretty bad. The real measure ends up being ‘damage done’. I think you were also the bottom of that list though. er… Now that I think about it this advice I am about to give would be better suited in a blog post…. brb
heh

Bottom of both charts? Blah…at least I’m consistent!
I’m using Power Auras Classic to track DoTs, ES, SF, SWD – might be missing something.
Movement fights are the worst – I can hit DP and SWD on the run, but that puts me oom quickly so I have to use those carefully.
I might have some targeting problems too as sometimes I’m blasting away and I see the “No Target” message….ugh.

Well I checked Mr. Robot – http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/gear/usa/winterhoof/bocat#v1
Your gear is optimal! 😀
My question to you is what kind of DoT tracker are you using? It also helps having some power auras to tell you when the mob is under 25% health and other important cooldowns.
The best bet with DoT classes is to just practice your rotation, over and over and over and over again. Of course that could be said for any dps class TBH, but espcially for DoT classes because we have so many things to keep track of.
As for the mushrooms, it wasn’t a big deal. 🙂 That cave in Un’Goro had a TON so it didn’t take long at all.

Nice outfits! I approve!!! I definitely recommend getting Priest T5. 🙂
As far as shadow DPS.
I would recommend the following rotation
On a boss pull – shadowfiend, pot if you have some.
Mind Spike x2, Followed by Mind Blast.
Put up Dots.
Find Flay as filler, Shadow orbs up + MInd Blast? – Do it.
Empowered Shadows up, Reapply Dots as needed. Keep Empowered Shadows up. Rince and repeat. Keep Mind Blast on CD. Shadow Word: Death as approp to keep mana up and especially at under 25% health.
As others have mentioned – defintely look into a DoT tracker if you do not have one, it helps out a lot. (Needtoknow is the one I use – it can also track a whole lot of other things) Also if you need a really good cast bar add on try quartz – it takes into account latency as well, so you know whan you can cast with out getting the I cant do that yet message.

reply to my reply…oh yeah. on target switches…shadow is gonna be kinda nerfed. we do better on fights where we will not have to switch.
On a fight with a lot of adds like Rhyolith. I would either just AoE with Mind sear, or pick one mob DoT it up, and use him for my Mind Sear anchor. Another thing would be to place your instant cast Dots on mouseover. so you can easily spread your dots around.

I think I read about that opener somewhere but promptly forgot about it. I’m going to practice it and give it a shot 😀

“whoever was keeping me alive long enough to get the boss down” .. /sadface … poor Kerick, that’s almost worse than being called fatty all the time! lmao!! That was an awesome ending though, and Billz/Lemme did a fantastic job of frost DK tanking long enough to get him low on health for us, too.
Also, I absolutely love your death shots, those are classic. I’d love to post a collection of Fayle tanking the floor, but alas, my hard drive would not able to handle it.

Was that Kerick? Then Kerick gets full credit and thanks! 😀
Yes, it’s rather sad that I have enough “death shots” to publish a book. I could intersperse the pictures with WoW Logs of my stunning DPS…that would explain it all 🙂
