Miniwing Companion Pet

Skywing is a typical “escort” type quest found in Outland – you and a perhaps a friend escort a bird through mobs, fight the “boss” and if successful, you get a reward.

I had not attempted the quest yet, but my Warrior friend tried it solo and failed – he didn’t know about the part where Skywing jumps off the platform and lost sight of him – so we decided to try the quest as a group (it recommends two players.)

Everything went fine until the platform.  Although we knew Skywing will jump and were ready, well, we missed the platform, landed on the ground and by the time we got back up it was over.

We abandonded the quest, went back to the starting point, waited until Skywing respawned and tried again.

This time everything worked, we defeated the “boss”, Skywing escaped and we claimed our reward – a Miniwing Companion Pet.

This quest could be done solo as the mobs are not that many or difficult.  What is difficult is the bird flying everywhere, pausing, changing direction and disappearing out of your line of sight.

If you don’t get it the first time, try again – it’s a lot easier once you see how the bird moves and know it’s travel path.  The final “boss” has a lightening effect and knock back blow so just be careful not to get close to the edge of the platform and get thrown off – other than that, easy quest for a pretty companion pet!

Mr. Pinchy and the Magical Crawdad

First, I have to apologize to everyone who has been trying (hours, days, months) to catch Mr. Pinchy with no success.  It’s discouraging reading stories about how someone got a rare companion pet on the first drop when I’ve spent hours (days, months) trying for pets like the Dark Whelpling and Emerald Whelpling and not have one drop.

Now I get to write the story myself – yes, I got Mr. Pinchy and the Magical Crawdad pet the first time I tried fishing the Highland Mixed School pools.  I guess Nat’s Lucky Fishing Pole really is lucky!

My Warrior friend and I were working on some rather difficult quests in the Blackwind Lake area – difficult because hostile mobs are found in the land, sea and air.

While we were doing the quests I noticed there were a few pools in the water and after we completed the quests I decided to go back and work on my fishing skill.

This is a rather dangerous fishing spot because one has to keep an eye open for water elementals, attacking birds, angry humanoids, nasty beasts and a giant “Forest Ranger” tree that will happily stomp you into the ground if you’re not paying attention.

I turned on my Fish Finder and revealed a couple of pools marked “Highland Mixed School”, cleared the area as much as I could, and started fishing.

The first 4 pools I tried only fished up Furious Crawdad and a few Inscribed Scrollcases, Motes of Water, Curious Cases and miscellaneous junk – the 5th pool fished up Mr. Pinchy.

Fishing up Mr. Pinchy does not guarantee the Magical Crawdad pet – you get three “wishes” (charges) with a 2-day cooldown between each charge with the possibility of receiving one of five random gifts (details and strategies can be found at El’s Extreme Anglin’ site.)

I clicked Mr. Pinchy for my first wish, and got the Magical Crawdad Box.

Of course, inside was the Magical Crawdad Pet!

The Magical Crawdad Pet is quite an impressive size for a Companion Pet and attracts a lot of attention!

This also added to the Outland Angler Achievement for fishing the Highland Mixed School, and the Mr. Pinchy’s Magical Crawdad Box Achievement.

As a side note, I got the Recipe: Captain Rumsey’s Lager in the Box of Meat for the Daily Cooking Quest – nothing like a good beverage while fishing!

So far, it’s been a very good WoW week!
