That well, isn’t really so Epic.

Once in a while I work on the Exploration Achievements – last night I was picking up a few areas missed in Eastern Kingdom zones and worked my way down to Stranglethorn Vale.

The last area I needed to discover was the Bloodsail Compound, so while I was there I decided to test my luck and see if I could get the Hyacinth Macaw to drop.

No Macaw – just a lot of Volatile Rum for Goblin Rocket Fuel if I can find an Alchemist with the recipe.

I was about to call it quits when I noticed a Purple Epic item had dropped – the Dazzling Longsword.

I was a little excited about getting my first Epic drop until I read the stats – nothing of any use to a Hunter:

Dazzling Longsword
Binds when equipped
One-Hand Sword
37 – 70 Damage
Speed 1.70 (31.5 damage per second)
Durability 105/105
Requires Level 36
Item Level 41
Chance on hit: Decrease the armor of the target by 100 for 30 sec.  While affected, the target cannot stealth or turn invisible.

Hunters already have a few tricks up their sleeve to detect stealthed or invisible opponents, so the chance on hit isn’t much of an advantage.

This might have been a nice sword for my Hunter about 20 levels ago but even back then if a Hunter is unfortunate enough to be in melee range, I’d want something that hits a little harder.

So off it goes to the Auction House – if it sells, fine – if not I’ll use it myself just to work on my Sword skill.

I would have been much happier with the Hyacinth Macaw….

When things go wrong….

I went back to Winterspring to see if I could get that elusive Schematic: Arcanite Dragonling to drop, but again, all I found were two more Pattern: Robe of Winter Night and one Recipe: Greater Arcane Protection Potion.

I enlisted my Warrior friend to come along as he needed some leather for a Blacksmithing project and the Dragonkin will skin Heavy or Rugged Leather.

We cleared the outside area and started working our way into the cave when we inadvertently pulled more mobs than we expected.

6 Whelpings + 2 Cobalt Scalebane + 1 Cobalt Mageweaver + 1 Elite Dragon (Scryer) = Graveyard Run

It seemed a good time to call it quits but we did get about 10 stacks of leather.

I’m convinced my original assumption was correct – the Schematic will never drop if you’re an Engineer, if it really drops at all.

At this rate I’ll be buying it in Dalaran long before I see it drop.
